Information

Emily Riedman-Walkiewicz is an artist and art educator currently residing in New York City.

My artwork deals with location and the idea that a certain place can shape one’s cultural habits and ideals. My work evokes nostalgia for a place that the viewer may not have even visited. I am interested in how different places can shape identity and how people choose to escape or embrace this through their daily rituals and cultural practices. I am intrigued by the meaning and boundaries of public versus private space, and how this affects identity.

My current work is done in acrylic paint on watercolor paper and is based on photographs taken on car rides through rural New Jersey, the beaches of Long Island and the bars of New York City. They serve as a glimpse into the journey of one's experience, yet leaving room for the viewer’s own nostalgia.

I am a native New Yorker; I completed a BFA in Painting and Education at Parsons School of Design and an MA in Media Studies and Video Production at the New School University.

I’ve taught within the Pre-Enrollment Department at Parsons School of Design for the past fourteen semesters, I've taught; drawing, digital photography and foundations of design. I've completed residencies as a teaching artist through Working Playground Inc. and The Center for Arts Education at The Facing History High School and Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School as well as other Public Schools in New York City from 2002-2006.

I also ran a small arts-education business called Park Slope Art and maintained a studio practice out of Brooklyn, New York from 2004-2006.

In 2006, I became a full-time art teacher at Salk School of Science. My goal in teaching is to provide students with experiences that relate to their social and political surroundings. I enable and encourage my students to make sense of their own worlds through the use of contemporary media.
